Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Erect, usually many-branched shrubs 5–20 dm tall, or sprawling, few–branched shrubs.

Stems: Stems several from base, 3–6 dm long, bark reddish brown, striate, young shoots rusty pilose to tomentose, usually soon glabrate.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate to subopposite or subternate, closely spaced and imbricate or sometimes well-spaced in few–branched plants. Blades linear–filiform, oblong–linear, linear–elliptic, or narrowly elliptic, often somewhat falcate, rarely some of the main stem leaves ovate, 15–55 mm long, 1–8 mm wide, some of them up to 15 mm wide. Apex acute to bluntly acute or attenuate-acute and usually slightly hooked. Base attenuate or narrowly cuneate. Surfaces sparsely pilose when young, usually soon glabrate. Margins revolute. 1-veined, sometimes the lateral veins evident. Petioles (1–)3–8 mm long, sometimes those on main stem up to 1.5 cm long. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers solitary in leaf axils. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic, (5)6–8-merous, pedicels (4–)15–35 mm long, sometimes elongating to 20–36 mm long in fruit, ± rusty pilose, especially when young, bracteate, bracteoles absent. Calyx of 5 sepals, lobes lanceolate to ovate or broadly ovate, 4–6 mm long. Corolla reddish purple to burgundy, the veins darker, campanulate, 9–11 mm long, the lobes obovate to narrowly obovate, imbricate. Stamens as many as and opposite the corolla lobes; filaments connate from base up to ½ their length, adnate to corolla tube; anthers dithecal. Ovary superior, 1-celled; ovule placentation free-central; style 1.

Fruit: Capsules broadly ovoid to subglobose; 5–8 mm long; regularly dehiscent. Seeds numerous; nearly black; irregularly shaped; 1–1.7 mm long; margins slightly winged; seed coat crustaceous.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Open sites; often on wet cliffs or rock walls in mesic shrubland; wet forest; and subalpine shrubland.

Elevation Range: 760–2,200 m.
